Project On Ultrasound Gesture Detection

In this project, ultrasound around 24kHz was used to detect movement near an object. Waving a hand or other solid object near the source of the ultrasound (speaker) causes a shift in the frequency of the sound, which is then detected by a microphone. We detected characteristic shifts in frequency to determine whether motion was towards (push) or away from (pull) the microphone. Two modes of visual indication were used to display the results of the motion detection: blinking LEDs and a computer display. With the blinking LEDs, a different color LED would light up according to the direction of motion detected. In the computer animation, the waveform would be displayed on screen along with markings of which parts are pulls and pushes. Sections of the waveform that represent different motions would be marked as push or pull.

Project On Low Cost Scanning Laser Rangefinder

As computers  and software  become  more powerful  and the area of their application expands, the traditional mouse and keyboard, become more restrictive. Many different devices have been developed to increase Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and this development  continues  today.  The most  commonplace  Human  Computer  Interactive device on the commercial market today is the Touch Screen. However, even the touch screen restricts HCI to some extent.  These shortcomings and the search to find devices that overcome them were the driving force behind the development of a Scanning Laser Rangefinder for this thesis project.

GSM mobile based car control Project

A   remote   control   vehicle   is    defined   as     any mobile  device  that  is  controlled by  a  means  that  does  not restrict its motion with an origin external to the device. This is often   a         radio  control     device,   cable      between  control  and vehicle,  or  an  infrared  controller.  A remote control  vehicle (Also called  as RCV)  differs  from  a robot  in that  the  RCV is always controlled by a human and takes no positive action autonomously.
One of the key technologies which underpin this field is that of remote vehicle control. It is vital that a vehicle should be capable of proceeding accurately to a target area; maneuvering  within that area to   fulfill    its    mission  and returning equally accurately and safely to base.

Project on Wireless Drawing Device

For our final project, we want to build a wireless drawing device. The user uses a keypad or a mouse to draw on the TV through a wireless communication medium (RF - 433.92 MHz). The user should be able to move
the drawing pointer to anywhere within the four border lines. One should also be able to draw or erase images on the TV screen. In designing this project, we have two goals - a primary, which is realizable, and a secondary, which is feasible. Our realizable goal is to build a wireless keypad interface with the television. In this interface, we want the keypad to be able to draw and erase on the TV. When we accomplish our primary goal, we shall attempt to achieve our secondary goal: to build a wireless mouse having the same functionality as the keypad. Due to time constraints, we ended up only being able to complete the primary goal. We chose this project because we were inspired by wireless communication technology.

Project on Optical Range Finder Based on Position Sensitive Detector

A range finder is any device capable of measuring the distance between two points. Optical methods to measure distance have a long history. There are several methods used to measure distance-using light. These include instruments based on the rangefinder principles such as fixed base and fixed angle. Other technologies include theodolites that use stadia tacheometry, tangent tacheometry and wedge attachments to theodolites. Finally there are devices such as self-reducing tacheometers, subtense bars and plane table alidades.

Thesis on AUDITING AND EVENT CORRELATION /Intruder Detection System

This Thesis is focused on Auditing and Event Correlation. A system is developed to help system administrators analyse system attacks in response to alerts from Intrusion Detection Systems or analyse audit data post hoc. The system is aimed at identifying information leakage between files and processes. In addition, the system also aims to identify illegal user command activity and system attacks. The system is based on Linux and correlates Kernel audit data with shell history data. In addition, File accesses are correlated into a per session audit
log. A query engine is written to analyse multiple audit logs. This system is a prototype and further work will evolve from it.

Project On Bluetooth Based Location Estimation for Mobile Applications

Many applications nowadays require location based services to ful ll their intended functionality. There already exist localization techniques, such as GPS, that function in outdoor schemes. Yet, these techniques are not suitable for indoor scenarios where the line of sight component of the wireless signal is blocked. We propose to design a system that tackles this problem and provides the indoor location based services. Moreover, since the user's location is not xed, wired technologies can not be utilized, therefore wireless technologies should be exploited. Among these technologies, Bluetooth appears to be the best candidate because it operates at lower
power and cost and provides better accuracy. Through location awareness capability, the proposed system provides the user with a service relative to his location.
We propose to exploit the available advances of Bluetooth technology to design a solution to the aforementioned problem. The proposed solution targets mobile devices, that are within the reach of most people, such as mobile phones, personal digital assistance (PDAs), laptops, tablet PCs.

Thesis on Reliable Communication over Optical Fading Channels

In free space optical communication links, atmospheric turbulence causes random fluctuations in the refractive index of air at optical wavelengths, which in turn cause random fluctuations in the intensity and phase of a propagating optical signal. These intensity fluctuations, termed “fading,” can lead to an increase in link error probability, thereby degrading communication performance. Two techniques are suggested to combat the detrimental effects of fading, viz., (a) estimation of channel fade and use of these estimates at the transmitter or receiver; and (b) use of multiple transmitter and receiver elements. In this thesis, we consider several key issues concerning reliable transmission…

Thesis On Computer Aided Design of Wide-Band Microwave Components

In recent years there was a notable developmental leap in communications systems operating at microwave frequencies. In the dissertation, the goal is to demonstrate the challenges and to propose solutions that enable the successful design and realization of very wide band microwave components, in particular, microwave directional couplers and filters. Directional couplers are an essential part in microwave systems. They are commonly used for dividing or combining signals. For example they are used in the generation of the desired power division in beam-forming networks for spacecraft antennas. In other applications, they are used for power monitoring. In the dissertation, a comprehensive treatment of wide-band ridge waveguide directional couplers is included. Analysis and design of different configurations and arrangement of couplers realized in ridge waveguides are discussed. A new detailed systematic design procedure for ridge waveguide couplers in the two most used configurations “

Thesis on IMPLEMENTING A ROBUST 3-DIMENSIONAL EGOCENTRIC NAVIGATION SYSTEM

Robot Navigation is a large component of current robotics research. In this paper, a method to implement the “go-to-goal” aspect of navigation is discussed. Specifically, I will first discuss a method called Egocentric Navigation, which was developed at Vanderbilt University’s Center for Intelligent Systems. Then improvements toward making the system more accurate and efficient will be proposed. Finally, the experimental and simulation results of this new Egocentric Navigational system follow. In total, this paper will lay out a complete system for implementation on a robot which will accomplish navigation to goal in a landmark-based “egocentric” manner.
